S.A.F.E.T.Y.: Shooting Archery Field Excellency Trials for Youth. Each spring and fall, more than 225 middle and high school students and a parent from north and central Texas participate in S.A.F.E.T.Y. Extravaganza at Greystone Castle Sporting Club Near Mingus, Texas.
The students are among 3,500 who complete the Outdoor Adventures elective course each year as part of their physical education classes at area schools, learning fishing, conservation, backpacking, rock climbing, outdoor cooking, CPR and first aid, hunter and boater safety, and orienteering.
As an added bonus, the students that are enrolled in the class are given the chance to participate in the Shooting, Archery, Field, Excellency Trials for Youth (S.A.F.E.T.Y.) event. The students, along with one parent, are taken to Greystone Castle for a full day of hands-on field training. Here they are taught to shoot shotgun, pistol, rifle, muzzleloader, bow and arrow and crossbow. These skills, along with a comprehensive field exercise that promotes safety and hunting ethics, make for a full day of exhilarating learning.
